While in the majority of countries regular population censuses are conducted in years ending in zero, the European Union determined the 2011 year as the reference year for the next census in its Member States. It means that next year in May a census will also be conducted in the Slovak Republic.
Considering, that the required data on population and housing cannot be obtained by another way, only with direct cooperation with citizens, the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic will pay a key attention to the preparation of the Census. Open Door Day which will be held on occasion of the World Statistics Day, on Wednesday, 20 October 2010, in the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic will draw the public´s attention to the importance of this oldest, most extensive and most important statistical survey.
Census enables societies to better know each other and be able to make accurate prognoses for their future development. Using census data will affect our lives in the next ten years. The prepared statistical inquiry can be considered with good reason as an exceptional opportunity to contribute to a comprehensive holistic picture of the demographic and social situation and the living condition of the Slovak Republic´s population.
Census Sheets will remain anonymous even after their completion. It is not required to indicate name, surname or birth number of a citizen. Thus, any identification of a concrete person will be excluded during data processing.
For the first time in history, Census Sheets can also be completed online, thanks to a unique identifier, which is a meaningless, randomly generated number or verification password, delivered to all citizens by Census Takers. They will also be required to prove their identity by a special authorization issued to them by the mayor of a municipality. The selection and management of their performance is in the competence of municipalities, pursuant to Law Act No. 263/2008 Coll. on Population and Housing Census in 2011.
