The Statistical Office of the SR released the definitive results of the 2011 Population and Housing Census on mother tongue and on highest educational attainment of permanent residents
Over the past 10 years since the 2001 Census in Slovakia, the educational level of the society underwent quite significant changes in favour of the university graduates as it is confirmed by the data in the latest publication issued by the Statistical Office of the SR compiled from the results of the 2011 Population and Housing Census on population by educational attainment. According to the results, the share of permanent residents with completed higher education either at Bachelor´ s, Master´s, Engineer´s , Doctor´s or Doctorate level grew from 7,8% (423 324) in 2001 to 13,8% (747 968) in 2011.
During the intercensal period 2001-2011 the number of university graduates continued to grow in all regions of the SR. The biggest number of people with completed Bachelor´s, Master´s, Engineer´s, Doctor´s or Doctorate degree as of the decisive census moment, 21st May 2011, lived in the Bratislava region (26,2%, i.e. 157 678), in Bratislava V (35,3%, i.e. 39 257) and in the municipality Bratislava-Petržalka (35,9%, i.e. 38 036). In 6 municipalities with 14 up to 514 inhabitants in the districts Rimavská Sobota, Veľký Krtíš and Medzilaborce none of the permanent residents had a university degree at the decisive census moment.
Another publication of the Statistical Office of the SR Basic data on 2011 Population and Housing Census, population by mother tongue, will inform the lay and professional public about the fact that the mother tongue of the majority of permanent SR residents is Slovak (78,6%, i.e. 4 240 453). The majority of permanent residents in all 8 SR regions named Slovak as their mother tongue. In only 4 out of 79 districts less than 50% of permanent residents claimed Slovak language as their mother tongue. In 22 municipalities lived only inhabitants of Slovak mother tongue and in the rest of the 2 293 municipalities the mother tongue of more than 50% of the inhabitants was Slovak.
The Hungarian language is the mother tongue of 9,4%, i.e. 508 714 people living in the SR. 2,3%, i.e. 122 518 of permanent residents had the Romany language as their mother tongue and 1%, i.e. 55 469 the Ruthenian language. Another mother tongues were reported by less than 1% of permanent residents of the SR.
